Case Example: Designing a Continuity‑Focused Shift Pattern for Chelsea Hospital
Chelsea Hospital approached us with a challenge that was both clinically important and operationally unusual: they needed a shift pattern that guaranteed continuity. Not just good handovers, but a structure where every day’s team included someone who was on shift yesterday, and someone who would also be there tomorrow.
For a hospital environment, this level of continuity is invaluable. If a patient’s condition changes, there must be someone on duty who witnessed it first‑hand. Someone who can relay the nuance, context and clinical judgement that no written note or digital system can fully capture. Chelsea Hospital wanted a pattern that protected this flow of information, ensuring safer, more consistent care.
But continuity alone wasn’t enough. The shift pattern also had to be:
  • Fair for the nursing team
  • Sustainable, with fatigue kept to a minimum
  • Aligned with the real workload
  • Practical, including a cover arrangement that preserved continuity even during absences
  • Something nurses would genuinely enjoy working on
Balancing all of these requirements meant stepping outside the boundaries of traditional healthcare shift systems. We modelled multiple options, tested different rotation lengths, and explored how continuity could be built into both the core pattern and the cover structure. The goal was to create a rota that felt natural to work, protected wellbeing, and still delivered the clinical consistency the hospital needed.
The final design was a unique shift pattern tailored specifically to Chelsea Hospital’s priorities. It ensured that every day’s team included familiar faces with recent knowledge of each patient’s condition, while still giving nurses a fair, predictable and manageable working rhythm. It was a tricky challenge — but an enjoyable one — and a perfect example of how thoughtful shift design can support both staff and patient care.

Designing a Holidays‑Included Shift Pattern for Wedding Planners
Visualrota supports all industries with their workforce planning
For more than 30 years we’ve helped private‑sector organisations improve the way they run their shift operations. From manufacturing and food production to logistics, energy, media and finance, our clients trust us to design fair, efficient and sustainable shift systems that support both their people and their workload.
Every organisation is different, but the challenges are often the same: staffing pressures, fairness concerns, fatigue, rising demand, and the need for a system that works in the real world. We bring deep operational expertise, clear communication and practical modelling to help teams make confident, evidence‑based decisions.
The companies here represent just some of the private‑sector organisations who have chosen us to support their shift pattern design, workforce planning, migration planning and training. Their trust reflects our commitment to delivering solutions that are fair, robust and built to last.
Many control centres need 24/7 operations
Case Example: Designing a Holidays‑Included Shift Pattern for Wedding Planners
Premium wedding venues rely on long, detailed client journeys, often 12 to 18 months of planning, relationship‑building and on‑the‑day delivery. One of our clients needed a shift pattern that protected this continuity while still being fair, predictable and sustainable for their planners.
We designed a holidays‑included shift system that kept each couple with the same planner throughout their journey, reduced last‑minute disruptions, and increased capacity to around 70 weddings per year. The pattern aligned staffing to the real workload, protected key wedding dates, and reduced stress for the planning team.
It’s a great example of how thoughtful rota design can strengthen client relationships, improve wellbeing and support commercial growth.
Call centres can be based anywhere in the world
Many of our international clients operate across multiple time zones, with teams spread around the world who need to work seamlessly together. We support these organisations in designing follow‑the‑sun shift patterns: systems where each region hands over smoothly to the next, ensuring 24‑hour coverage while allowing every team to work only during their local daytime hours.
This approach reduces fatigue, improves communication, and creates a more sustainable way of working for global operations. Whether it’s coordinating sites across continents, aligning customer support teams worldwide, or ensuring critical information is passed on without delay, we help international organisations build shift systems that are fair, efficient and resilient.
The companies here represent just some of the global organisations who trust us to support their workforce planning, shift pattern design and operational change across borders.

A shift pattern is not something you buy off the peg and force yourself into. A shift pattern should be moulded to you. It’s about taking the company’s needs, and the shift workers’ needs and creating something that is unique and will work for everybody
